The project partnership involves three industries, Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells (UK), Solvay Speciality Polymers (IT), ElringKlinger (DE), the automotive OEM, BMW Group (DE), the SME, Pretexo (FR) and is coordinated by CNRS Montpellier (FR). Daimler (DE) is involved as an associate partner.

The team "Aggregates, Interfaces and Materials for Energy" (AIME) at the Institute for Molecular Chemistry and Materials (ICGM) is a joint research unit of CNRS (French National Research Organisation) and the University of Montpellier. It associates competence in innovative synthesis routes to hierarchical materials with tailored architecture and in surface reactivity and the chemistry of interfaces, with complementary theoretical and experimental approaches applied to energy storage and conversion and environmental remediation processes. The perspectives of the research are two-fold: elaboration of original materials enabling emerging energy technologies and the study of the interfacial properties and mechanisms governing exchange of energy and matter at interfaces.
The fuel cells and hydrogen materials and devices research programme at CNRS Montpellier (ICGM-AIME) has been developed over the past 20 years and currently encompasses activities on materials and cell developments for proton exchange membrane and proton ceramic fuel cells, PEM and alkaline electrolysis and hydrogen generation from liquid fuels as well as hydrogen sensors. One driver for this research is the future use of fuel cells in automotive and stationary applications, and the group plays a particularly active role in the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (Joint Technology Initiative).
In one aspect of our current work, we are developing membrane materials adapted for use in the low, intermediate and high temperature PEMFC ranges, where we are focussing on recognised bottlenecks: insufficient mechanical stability of low equivalent weight perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers, lack of membrane materials for the intermediate temperature range at low relative humidity, insufficient durability of high temperature PEMFC membranes. In FCH-JU VOLUMETRIQ, we are building on the very promising results obtained in FCH-JU MAESTRO where we developed nanofibre membrane reinforcements by electrospinning and demonstrated a remarkable improvement in membrane mechanical properties and durability.

Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells

Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells Ltd (JMFC) is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of fuel cell catalysts, membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and other catalysed components such as catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) to fuel cell developers worldwide. JMFC is a partly owned subsidiary of Johnson Matthey plc, a speciality chemicals company and world leader in advanced materials technology with over 11,000 employees in over 30 countries. JMFC develops and supplies catalysts, electrodes, CCMs and MEAs for both low temperature PEMFC and direct methanol fuel cell applications and high temperature phosphoric acid based fuel cell systems. JMFC has 125 dedicated employees, primarily in the UK, but also in the US and Japan. Over 50% of the staff are professional technical personnel with science and engineering qualifications, working in research, product and process development. Significant investments have been made in recent years in world-class fuel cell component research and MEA testing facilities at the parent corporate Technology Centre in Sonning Common, near Reading, and in the world's first dedicated electrode and MEA manufacturing facility in Swindon, Wiltshire. Of particular relevance are the multimillion euro investments over the last two years in advanced production scale coating and converting equipment fully contained in clean rooms with Class 1000 capability.

JMFC has considerable experience participating in and leading successful government supported collaborative R&D projects from Innovate UK and the EU Framework 6 (Autobrane and HyTRAN), Framework 7 (QuasiDry and MAESTRO) ) and current FCH-JU (CATAPULT, IMPACT, NOVEL and DEMCOPEM-2MW) programmes. - Solvay Speciality Polymers

The company represents one Global Business Unit (GBU), named Specialty Polymers,, created on 1st April 2011 by merging the activities of four leading Solvay companies previously named: Solvay Solexis S.p.A, Solvay Advanced Polymers LLC, Solvay Padanaplast S.p.A and SolVin SA.

- ElringKlinger AG

ElringKlinger AG has worldwide activities in the development and the supply of cylinder head gaskets as well as several other flat gaskets, housing modules and thermal shielding modules for engines, gear boxes and exhaust systems. ElringKlinger is the only independent gasket manufacturer with global activities and supplies almost every European and American vehicle manufacturer as well as numerous Asian car and truck companies.
With more than 7000 employees at 42 locations in Europe, America, Africa and Asia the ElringKlinger group generated a turnover of more than 1.200,00 million Euro in the year 2013.
ElringKlinger develops processes and produces components for planar fuel cell stacks since the year 2000. Serial production of components for the automotive fuel cell drive unit was launched in 2008. Sheet metal forming, temperature treatments, a variety of coating methods, part handling and the assembly of thin sheet metal pieces as well as laser welding are common processes in the mass production of sheet metal gaskets. This production know-how in combination with the stacking experience of ElringKlinger are an outstanding base for a future mass-production of fuel cell components using quality control methodology for volume manufacture for different applications to conditions and costs that are common in the car industry.

Pretexo is a small company (EURL) – France created in 2007 by Dr Nathalie Cros. Pretexo has developed various activities to facilitate and improve information sharing, communication and dissemination between partners and towards the public.
Pretexo proposes its skills in various fields such as administrative management, reporting, implementation and maintenance of dedicated project websites and internal project workspaces, and meeting organisation.
